Translation (Rita Seng Mai) Once upon a time, there were two brothers who lost their parents at a young age in a village. As they didn't have parents, they worked as daily wagers at a rich man's house. They helped look after and graze the cows. They were still young, but they were well-behaved and hardworking. They worked as daily wagers for the rich man by looking after his cows for a long time. They couldn't do other tiring jobs, so they worked there and earned their living. They worked there for seven or eight years. As they became adults, they became more well-mannered. They learned a lot and knew what was right and wrong. They discussed, "We have worked as cowboys for many years. Let's not work like that anymore." Then they stopped working as cowboys and looked for other jobs. Although they changed jobs, they still worked as daily wagers. They worked for other rich man as farmers. They worked there for a long time by growing plants and flowers. Although they worked there for a long time, they lived hand to mouth. They didn't have any special benefits for working there. They discussed again, "Let's not live like this anymore. Make the hole bigger for me please, so I can escape." The orphan boy really made the hole bigger for the dragon to be able to escape. Before the dragon came out of it, it said to the boy, "Don't be scared of me when I come out. If you are scared, you can turn back." When the orphan boy turned back, the dragon transformed itself into a black snake with red eyes and crawled out of it. It said to him, "Orphan boy, you saved me. I will give you a priceless thing as a present. You can wish anything you want. Wait for me here." And it went into the water. After a moment, a small snake carrying a piece of jade in its mouth approached the orphan boy. It said, "This is my gift of gratitude to you. Ask it for whatever you need." The orphan boy said, "Thank you," and accepted it with both hands. Since that day, he could get anything he wanted. Whenever he craved something, he just asked the jade, and it gave him the food. Whenever he wished for fine clothes, he just asked the jade, and it would provide him. He also asked for a big, beautiful house to live in. Then he thought, "I have everything I want. I feel lonely to stay alone. I will look for a partner." So, he asked two village elders to request the princess's hand in marriage. The princess agreed to get married. Then the princess told her father about it. The father robbed the jade from him. And he took the orphan boy to his house and made him work as a servant. He made him collect wood, fetch water, and do other exhausting tasks. He made his son-in-law fetch water for his daily bath. The orphan boy was in trouble. At that time, his friend Brand Dut appeared while carrying a dried gourd. He was so happy to see him and told him everything. He told him how he got rich before and how he became a servant. Brang Dut felt pity for him and encouraged him, "It's okay, Brang Awng. We can fix everything little by little." And he continued, "Brang Awng, that's great that your father-in-law likes taking a shower every day. I only worry if he might not want it." Transcription (Lu Awng) 很久以前在一个村子里,有两个从小失去父母的男孩。因为他们都失去了父母,所以去了一个富人家里当雇工放牛。这两个男孩虽然年纪小,但心地善良懂事,工作一直无可挑剔。因此在这个富人家里放牛,靠放牛勉强维持生计。他们不会做其他工作,只能靠放牛为生。七八年后,他们长大了,成为了大人,心思也更成熟,懂得了很多道理,能分辨好坏。于是两人商量:“我们放牛已经很久了,别再当雇工放牛了”,然后去找其他工作。虽然找到了其他工作,但还是雇工。他们住在另一个富人家里,打理农场和花园,又住了相当长一段时间。尽管工作了很久,他们也只是勉强糊口,没有什么显著的好处。于是两人商量:“我们不能这样下去,做买卖吧”,然后开始做生意。因为没有资本,只能向别人借,所以一次次亏本,就像只为别人赚钱,自己没有好处。他们感到沮丧,说:“我们分开找工作吧,各自干活,但约定一天见面。” 然后他们分开找工作。他们也有名字,一个叫Brang Awng,一个叫Brang Dut。Brang Awng懂一点锯木活。有一天,一个富人来找他说:“嗨,孤儿,你今天帮帮我。” Brang Awng说:“好的,什么活?” 富人说:“Numshang山谷里有一棵Lagat树挡住了路,请去把它砍了。” Brang Awng答应了,磨快斧头去Numshang山谷砍树。他看到树有个树洞,但还是准备砍。这时,一条龙从树洞里说话:“嗨,孤儿,请救救我。我厌倦了住在这Lagat树根的树洞里,不想再住在这里了。我年轻时进来住,但现在身体比洞口大,出不去了。请救救我,把洞口扩大让我出来。” 孤儿用斧头把洞口扩大让龙出来。龙出来前说:“我出来时你别害怕,害怕就背过身去。” 孤儿背过身,龙变成一条红眼睛的黑蛇从洞里出来。龙爬走时告诉孤儿:“孤儿,你救了我,我给你一个能实现你任何愿望的珍贵礼物,请在这里等。” 龙走进河里,很快一条小蛇叼着一块玉过来,说:“这是感谢你的礼物,你想要什么就问这块玉。” 孤儿双手接过说谢谢。从那天起,孤儿想要什么吃的问玉就能得到,想要好衣服也能得到,还问了一座漂亮宏伟的房子住进去。他想:“现在我什么都有了,一个人住很无聊,应该找个配偶。” 于是请村里两个绅士去王宫求娶公主。公主同意了,她的父母也允许。但当绅士们再次去确认时,公主的父母说:“如果他真的想娶我女儿,带一桶金子来。” 孤儿说:“他们要多少嫁妆我就给多少。” 他向玉要金子给了公主父母,然后娶了公主。婚后他们幸福地生活,什么都不用担心,想要什么都能轻易得到。妻子很惊讶:“这个男人什么都不做却能好好供养我,怎么做到的?” 她问丈夫:“你怎么能轻易得到一切?” 丈夫说:“不管我怎么得到的,我不会告诉你。” 但妻子一直求:“告诉我吧,我不会拿走的。” 丈夫想:“她已经是我妻子了,应该不会不诚实。” 于是把玉给妻子看。公主看后告诉了父亲,父亲强行夺走了玉,还把女婿(孤儿)带到王宫,让他做奴隶,强迫他做很多活:砍柴、挑水。富人每天洗澡,让女婿给他打水。当他被迫做很多活时,他的朋友Brang Dut提着一葫芦水过来。他很高兴,把自己的经历都告诉了朋友:怎么变富,怎么变成奴隶。Brang Dut很同情他,安慰说:“朋友Brang Awng,别担心,慢慢想办法。” Brang Dut继续说:“你岳父每天洗澡太好了,我还担心他不洗澡呢。” 然后Brang Dut把葫芦里的水倒进岳父洗澡用的桶里。富人用混合水洗澡后,全身出现了很多像火烧一样的肿包。富人问女婿:“女婿,你知道谁能治我的病吗?能去找治的人吗?” 女婿叫来朋友Brang Dut。Brang Dut到富人家问:“嗨,富人,你生病了吗?” 富人说:“是的,我不知道身体怎么了,如果你能治,请治我。” Brang Dut假装算命说:“你好像强行夺走了别人的贵重物品,还给主人,否则你好不了。” 富人说:“等我病好了就还。” Brang Dut威胁:“不行,不还的话,我怎么治都没用,还了才能治。” 富人把玉还给了孤儿。从那天起Brang Awng拿回了玉,带着孩子(他们已经有两个孩子)和朋友Brang Dut一起离开。他抛弃了不诚实、让父亲强行夺走玉的妻子。拿回玉后,他像以前一样富有,又娶了一个正派的女人,还安排朋友Brang Dut娶了一个好女孩。然后他们各自和家人幸福地生活。
