Unintentional Injuries in Men, Victoria 2014/15 to 2023/24 (Hazard Edition 95)

This edition of Hazard explores unintentional injuries among Victorian men. The risk factors, causes, and nature of injuries differ between women and men and also vary across age groups. Ageing is generally associated with changes in the patterns of injury epidemiology, and these age-related effects are different for women and men. Following on from Hazard Edition 94 which focused on women, the aim of edition 95 of Hazard is to provide an epidemiological overview of unintentional injuries in men across the adult lifespan. While age groups in women were aligned with menopausal transition, age groups in men do not have this component but capture work-life transition periods: 15–24 years, 25–44 years, 45–64 years, 65–74 years and 75+ years. Time trends for the ten-year period from 2014/15 to 2023/24 are presented as population-based injury rates. A more in-depth analysis of the injury patterns observed in the most recent three years (2021/22 to 2023/24) is presented as frequencies (counts) and proportions. Particular focus areas are work related injuries, DIY and other home injuries, falls, transport injury and injury comorbidity. Male/female injury comparisons are not presented: the focus is on injuries that are specifically relevant to men across the adult lifespan. This edition of Hazard was based on male injury-related hospital admissions recorded in the Victorian Admitted Episodes Dataset (VAED). The VAED data was sourced from the Victorian Department of Health and used to determine injury-related hospital admission incidence across the adult lifespan, hospital admission outcomes, and overall hospital burden, which are presented for each of the five age groups.
