BacteArte XII: Interdisciplinary Art and Science Event Memory

This dataset documents BacteArte 2024, a Colombian national interdisciplinary event that integrated biotechnology, art, and STEM education, held on October 26, 2024, at the Universidad de Santander (UDES), Bucaramanga, Colombia. The event was organized by the Bacteriology and Clinical Laboratory Program of UDES, with the support of Fundación Eureka Soluciones, as part of an initiative focused on science communication, education, and innovative learning practices.

BacteArte 2024 brought together 152 students from 10 Colombian universities, creating a national space for collaboration among students and educators interested in bioart, biotechnology, and creative scientific expression. The central component of the event was an exhibition inspired by the microscopic world, featuring agar-based biological artworks created using genetically modified Escherichia coli expressing chromogenic and fluorescent recombinant proteins. These artworks explored microbial growth, color expression, and artistic interpretation under controlled biosecurity conditions.

In addition to agar-based bioart, the event included complementary artistic categories such as scientific photography, painting, and other artistic expressions, expanding the scope of the exhibition beyond biological media. The exhibition was installed in public spaces within the university campus, facilitating broad engagement with the academic community.

The dataset compiles photographic and audiovisual documentation of the artworks, educational resources (including a biosecurity guide and a training course), participant and institutional metadata, certificates, and dissemination materials. All data were collected with prior authorization from participants and managed according to ethical and institutional guidelines.

This dataset serves as the official archival record of BacteArte 2024 and supports the documentation, preservation, and reuse of interdisciplinary educational practices at the intersection of biotechnology, bioart, and STEM education.

本次活动的核心环节为一场以微观世界为灵感的展览，展品为基于琼脂的生物艺术作品，均由表达显色与荧光重组蛋白的转基因大肠杆菌（Escherichia coli）制作而成。这些作品在受控生物安全条件下，探索了微生物生长、色彩表达与艺术诠释的可能性。
除基于琼脂的生物艺术作品外，本次活动还涵盖科学摄影、绘画等其他艺术类别，将展览的边界拓展至非生物媒介范畴。展览设于大学校园的公共空间，便于学术社群广泛参与。
本数据集收录了艺术作品的摄影与视听资料、教育资源（含生物安全指南与培训课程）、参与者与机构元数据、证书及传播材料。所有数据均在获得参与者事前授权后收集，并遵循伦理与机构规范进行管理。
本数据集作为BacteArte 2024的官方档案记录，可为生物技术、生物艺术与STEM教育交叉领域的跨学科教育实践的记录、保存与复用提供支持。
