Implementation of court-ordered cigarette “corrective statements” displayed in a regional sample of US tobacco retailers, 2024-2025

Following a historic 2006 U.S. Federal Court ruling, major cigarette manufacturers were mandated to display corrective statement signs about smoking harms at the point-of-sale in about 200,000 tobacco retailers nationwide from October 2023 to June 2025. This study conducted store assessments in a sample of affected tobacco retailers in New York City (NYC) and New Jersey (NJ), documenting signage display and other implementation features, and whether these differed by store type and community characteristics.
