Different varieties of V. volvacea can be roughly divided into two groups according to their fruiting body color—gray-white and dark black. Strain v9 is gray-white varieties and the fruiting body is bell-shaped and has a greater area of contact between its basal surface and the cultivated material. Strain v9 also has larger fruiting bodies than strain v26.
