The NSF-funded initiative WaterSoftHack, led by Clemson University, University of Iowa, and CUAHSI, aims to empower the water science community by bridging the gap in cyberinfrastructure (CI) prototyping and interdisciplinary workflow development. This three-year project, running from 2024 to 2026, seeks to integrate computer science, engineering, data science, and water science to train diverse researchers. As part of this project, we develop a suite of open-source water science educational software (WaterSoft) and curriculum and deliver them through a recurring, two-week hackathon (WaterSoftHack) with three core components: tutorials on state-of-the-art methodology, peer learning, and capstone projects in a collaborative environment. Launched in January of 2024, the program conducted the first and the second two-week online training workshop in July 2024 and 2025, followed by science communication learning. The WaterSoftHack events seek to enhance career advancement opportunities for researchers and students and contribute to the advancement of water informatics workflow development.
