Petroleum and Press -- The Concept of Oil in Polish Periodical Press, 1853--1918

The dataset consists of Polish-language periodicals that mention petroleum published between 1 January 1853 and 31 December 1918. The periodicals were downloaded together with their metadata from the Polona aggregator in May 2023 in PDF format, based on a keyword search. These PDF files contained OCRed digital images of physical documents held in archives and libraries and are all in the public domain. We then processed the files to create the dataset of only the articles pertaining to petroleum. To achieve this we have run layout recognition and segmentation, OCR and formatted the dataset to METS/MODS. The dataset is stored as individual ZIP files for each original newspaper identifier.

本数据集收录了1853年1月1日至1918年12月31日期间出版的、提及石油相关内容的波兰语期刊。该数据集的期刊基于关键词检索，于2023年5月从Polona聚合器（Polona aggregator）处连同其元数据一同以PDF格式下载获得。这些PDF文件包含了馆藏于档案馆与图书馆的实体文献的OCR（Optical Character Recognition，光学字符识别）数字化图像，且全部属于公有领域。随后我们对这些文件开展处理工作，仅筛选出与石油相关的文章以构建本数据集。为此，我们执行了版面识别与分割、OCR处理，并将数据集格式化为METS/MODS格式。本数据集以对应每个原始报纸标识符的独立ZIP文件形式进行存储。
