We describe a simple micropump for disposable microfluidic devices. The pump is constructed using a freeze-dried disc of a superabsorbent polymer (SAP). The disc absorbs a solution in a flow channel and swells upward in a pumping chamber. Despite the simple structure of this device, the rate of absorption remains constant and can be adjusted by changing the composition of the SAP, its size, the dimensions of the flow channel, and the medium to be absorbed. The pumping action can be initiated by applying an electrical signal using a switchable hydrophobic valve. The integrated approach of SAP pump and switchable valve could facilitate the automatic processing of many solutions required for bioassay.

本文介绍一款适用于一次性微流控装置的简易微型泵。该泵以高吸水性树脂(superabsorbent polymer, SAP)冷冻干燥圆盘为核心结构制备而成,此圆盘可吸收微流道内的溶液,并在泵腔中向上膨胀。尽管该器件结构简单,但其吸收速率始终保持恒定,且可通过调整高吸水性树脂的组分、尺寸、微流道尺寸以及待吸收介质对吸收速率进行调控。通过可切换疏水阀施加电信号即可启动泵吸动作。高吸水性树脂泵与可切换疏水阀的集成方案,可有效助力生物测定所需多种溶液的自动化处理流程。
