In this study we characterized microbial communities in tailings from a uranium mine waste facility, the Rabbit Lake In-Pit Tailings Management Facility (RLITMF), in Northern Saskatchewan, Canada. We sampled two RLITMF boreholes in summer 2014, taking samples from a number of depths in both boreholes. We used high-throughput amplicon sequencing (Illumina MiSeq platform) of the 16S rRNA gene (V4 region) to look at bacterial and archaeal diversity in the samples.
