The pathogenesis of chronic otitis media remains largely unknown. Though this is not typically considered an infection, varying genera of bacteria have been previously described in middle ear effusions (MEEs) from patients with chronic otitis media. Microbe analysis of MEEs using 16s rRNA sequencing allows detection of the bacterial genera within these samples and comparison of population and abundance of genera between samples, ultimately providing additional insight into the complex immunological response resulting in this condition.
