The energy accumulation of Red Knots (Calidris canutus) follows a three-stage pattern: they first accumulate proteins, then undergo rapid fat deposition, and finally resume protein accumulation. Prior to commencing long-distance migratory flights, organs unrelated to flight activity do not atrophy but instead gain mass to further accumulate proteins. Model analyses demonstrate that the energy reserves accrued by Red Knots in the tidal flat wetlands of the Bohai Bay play a critical role in both their migratory flights and subsequent breeding activities. This region supports 45% of the global piersmai and rogersi populations; consequently, the loss of these tidal flat wetlands will impose severe detrimental impacts on Red Knot populations.
