US Army National Guard Cultural Resources Planning Level Survey - South Carolina

In January 1998, St. Louis District personnel visited the South Carolina Army National Guard (SCARNG) Headquarters and the South Carolina Institute for Archaeology and Anthropology in Columbia to research archaeological and historic buildings survey work conducted on two Army National Guard facilities in the state: Clarks Hill Local Training Area and Leesburg Training Area. This document reports the history of cultural investigations on these federally owned or federally supported SCARNG facilities, lists archaeological sites recorded within facility boundaries, discusses historic contexts and predictive models, and provides a list of Native American tribes that may be culturally affiliated with archaeological collections recovered from the SCARNG facilities. To date, 67 prehistoric and historic archaeological sites have been recorded on Clarks Hill Local Training Area and Leesburg Training Site. No cultural properties located on SCARNG facilities have been listed on the National Register of Historic Places; however, two properties have been determined eligible, and 39 have been determined potentially eligible. The extent, nature, and location of archaeological collections recovered from work conducted on both SCARNG facilities will be determined in the second phase of this project, to be completed during Fiscal Year 1999.
