Images from an Archaeological Watching Brief at Fenton House, Precentors Court, York, April - September 2024

This collection comprises images from an archaeological watching brief at Fenton House, 9 Precentor's Court, York. This work was undertaken by On-Site Archaeology between April and September 2024. The limestone foundations uncovered during the groundworks appear to represent at least two buildings, or a building with two phases of construction. The foundations were recorded pre-dating the construction of the early 18th century No. 9 Fenton House and Nos. 4 and 8 High Petergate. Dating recovered from probable demolition deposits would appear to suggest a late medieval or post medieval date for demolition of the structures. It is possible that the destruction of the buildings was undertaken during the construction of No. 9 Fenton House, as it was noted that reused limestone blocks of a similar character as the earlier foundations with at least one architectural stone was incorporated into the foundations of No. 9.
