Tinea pedis is a chronic, recurrent superficial fungal infection that most commonly involves the toe web spaces. We here applied high-throughput sequencing technique to comprehensively investigate the bacterial and fungal microbiomes in patients with tinea pedis, subjects in the remission stage and healthy subjects. According to our data, superficial fungal infection was significantly correlated with alterations in the bacterial communities with increased Shannon diversity. The fungal taxonomy analysis demonstrated that the dominant genera might be inconsistent with the culture results. A high abundance of Streptococcus spp. was revealed in the patients, and a strong positive correlation was found between this pathogen and Trichophyton. Further studies are needed to investigate the crosstalk between the bacterial and fungal communities in the pathogenesis of recurrent fungal infection. In this dataset, we showed the 16s rRNA V4 amplicon sequencing of skin samples collected from toe web spaces of patients with tinea pedis (Pt), patients at remission stage (rem) and healthy controls (h.c.).
