Sugarcane is an economically important crop and India is one of the leading nations in sugar and cane production. Abiotic stresses reduce the potential yield of sugarcane by 70%, with drought being the most prominent factor. To study the drought transcriptome by high throughput sequencing strategies and subsequent identification of genes and pathways that are involved in the drought tolerant stress in sugarcane. the study will give significant conceptual understanding of drought effects and prediction of master regulators involved in imparting drought tolerance. it will also lead to the identification of potential candidate genes for developing functional markers for drought stress.
