Ecology Lab #2

Class was taken to the grassland and woodlot in the York University Campus to accomplish the experiment #2. 2 transect measuring tapes and 1 quadrat were provided. For the 1st part of the experiment, quadrat was used and placed on the ground to count and estimate the variables of: species, abundance of species, richness within the quadrat and percentage cover of that species. The kind of the species in quadrat was identified from the “plant term glossary and identification guide” which was given before the experiment. After identifying one of the species, the number of that species was counted to figure out the abundance. Then, the number of different species was counted in the quadrat to get the richness of quadrat. Also, lastly, percentage cover of the target species was estimated by dividing the quadrat into 4 equal squares visually.

本次实验课程组织学生前往约克大学校园内的草原与林地区域，开展第二项实验。本次实验配备2根样带卷尺与1个样方（quadrat）。实验第一环节使用样方：将样方放置于地面，用以计数并估算以下变量：物种种类、物种丰度、样方内物种丰富度，以及该物种的盖度百分比。样方内的物种需依据实验前发放的《植物术语词汇表与鉴定指南》进行辨识。确定某一物种后，统计其个体数量以计算该物种的丰度；随后统计样方内不同物种的总数，得到样方的物种丰富度。最后，通过将样方视觉划分为4个均等正方形的方式，估算目标物种的盖度百分比。
