From "lol" to Legal Literacy: A Micro-Case Study in Influencer Rhetoric and Civil–Criminal Misconceptions

This short analytical paper examines a viewer–creator interaction centered on public misunderstanding of civil versus criminal legal outcomes in the widely discussed streamer controversy involving “Tectone.” A YouTube commenter asked a legitimate procedural question regarding the difference between a criminal investigation yielding no charges and a civil court granting a long-term protective order. The creator’s single-word response, “lol,” and the community’s sarcastic reaction offer a compact example of rhetorical avoidance, epistemic erosion, and the failure of influencer commentary to provide legal clarity. Through textual analysis and annotated screenshots, this work documents how online discourse simplifies, distorts, or evades key legal distinctions, and how audiences increasingly recognize — and call out — these evasions. The paper contributes to ongoing digital ethnographic research into influencer ecosystems, parasocial interpretation, and misinformation dynamics in algorithmically mediated public spaces.
