Future Reef MAP is a three-year project designed to monitor ocean chemistry along the entire length of the Great Barrier Reef. It is a partnership between Rio Tinto Alcan, CSIRO and the Great Barrier Reef Foundation. The Future Reef Map Project is to develop the first large-scale CO2 observing system on the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) using the Rio Tinto ship, RTM Wakmatha. It is targeted at providing key information on the CO2 uptake in the region, the influence of the GBR reef complex on large-scale carbonate chemistry, and providing the foundation data needed to assess the vulnerability of the GBR reefs to ocean acidification. The repeat sampling from the ship will allow an assessment of controls and feedbacks on carbonate chemistry including the role of temperature change, freshwater inputs, and offshore-lagoon mixing in influencing carbonate chemistry and ocean acidification change. These data will be used for establishing the current status of the GBR with respect to net calcification and production (i.e. net growth or loss of reef material), and for identifying regional variability in the exposure of reef systems to ocean acidification. This dataset contains underway fCO2 measurements, atmospheric pressure, sea-surface temperature and salinity collected in December 2012 on the northbound leg of the voyage.
