Over the past 30 years, Pokémon has captured the hearts and minds of the world, developing a strong fanbase. As these fans grew up, their fandom became an important part of their identity. Now, as adults, many of these fans have begun passing their fandom down to their children. In this chapter, we explore how families bond and share their love for the Pokémon franchise. We conducted semi-structured interviews with 12 parents across the United States to better understand how they used Pokémon as a medium for bonding with their children. Three themes were identified in how established fans introduce their fandom to their children, which include 1) engagement in fandom culture, 2) family bonding over media, and 3) using Pokémon educationally. Overall, the findings suggest that Pokémon served as a medium for parents to bond with their children.
