This study aims to present the results of the first comprehensive marine habitat mapping conducted around Gyaros Island using marine remote sensing technologies. Gyaros Island, a remote isle in the Cyclades Archipelago, holds significant historical and ecological value. Possessing vital biological significance, the island has been part of the Natura 2000 network since 2011 and was designated as a Marine Protected Area (MPA) in 2019. Researchers carried out two independent expeditions in 2014 and 2017, surveying over 80 square kilometers of seabed area via multi-platform marine remote sensing technologies. The remote sensing survey employed side-scan sonar, sub-bottom profiler, as well as multibeam and single-beam echosounders. In addition to the remote sensing survey, a comprehensive ground truth network was established using underwater towed cameras and Van Veen sediment samplers, enabling full coverage of high-quality data for the region. Based on these data, researchers classified the area using three distinct marine habitat mapping frameworks: the expert protocol, the European Nature Information System, and Natura HD. The survey and classification results reveal that over 50% of the seabed is covered by priority habitats dominated by Posidonia oceanica meadows, coral reefs, and other calcareous biogenic crusts. Based on the outcomes of this work, the Gyaros Marine Protected Area was established, with various conservation and protection zones designated.
