Evaluative Investigations at the Au Sable Light Station, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, Michigan, 1990

Midwest Archeological Center personnel conducted two weeks of evaluative test excavations at 20AR193, the Au Sable Light Station, in the eastern portion of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in September of 1990. Undertaken in support of architectural and engineering consultation at the site prior to the restoration of some of the buildings at Au Sable, the Center excavations exposed subsurface foundation profiles at six standing structures. Additionally, limited block excavations and trenching exposed the remains of two structures which had been previously demolished. The first of these, a brick privy, likely dates to the original episode of construction in 1873-1874. The second structure, a probable frame shed, was constructed somewhat later in time but still prior to 1909. Testing in front of HS-ll, the double dwelling, exposed an extensive pavement of dry-laid broken bricks. However, no clear evidence was found of a structure which lay south of the keeper's dwelling, and no evidence was found to support the argument for relocation of the 1873-1874 privy from its initial position to its present site.
