In this project, Amsterdam's Municipal Health Service (GGD Amsterdam), in collaboration with partners, implement the intervention ‘nicotine-free school hours’ in 5 secondary schools (‘voortgezet onderwijs’). Research by Amsterdam UMC took place parallel to the implementation, with the aim to understand the implementation process. We therefore answer the following research questions: 1) What is the context of the schools prior to the implementation of the nicotine-free school day? 2) What are hindering and facilitating factors in adoption and implementation of nicotine-free school hours, according to school management, employees and students? 3) How do smoking and vaping behaviour change in response to nicotine-free school hours, according to observations and perspectives of management, employees and students? 4) What, according to management, employees and students, can improve the implementation of the intervention? We collected qualitative data, with some supportive quantitative data. Interviews and focus group discussions were held with, in total, 75 participants. These included students, teachers, support staff of the school and school management. interviews and focus groups were transcribed verbatim. Short demographic surveys were filled in by all participants. Observations around the participating schools, to count the number of smoking and vaping students, were carried out. Due to the sensitivity of the collected data (qualitative data, including youth), the transcripts cannot be published or shared. The quantitative data is limited in its sample size and of a selective group, and is meant to be supportive to the qualitative data. Therefore, this is not deemed suitable for use by external parties.
