A cabinet card photograph of Horace Little and Chinese pickers at his lemon grove, Ontario, California, USA, by Guy Carleton Hovey, circa 1890s. The image shows Little, holding a dog in his arms and standing near a ladder, at the right. In the foreground are three Chinese laborers, one dumping fruit into a crate, another picking fruit from ground level, and the third picking from a ladder. In the background is a horse-drawn cart loaded with crates. Other crates are near the laborers with two stamped "H Little" and another having a label with a grizzly bear image and having the words "Bear Brand", "Lemon Growers" and perhaps "Ontario California" and "Lemon Exchange." Printed at the bottom of the matte is the photographer's surname and that of the "Ontario Cucamonga Fruit Exchange" of North Ontario (later Upland) and listing packing houses at Ontario, North Ontario, Cucamonga and Narod, the latter being partly within Montclair today. Little, born in England in 1872, was an emigrant of 1890 or 1891 to the U.S., was in Ontario by at least 1895, and had an orchard there in the 1900 census. By 1910, he was in Santa Ana and then, in 1920, running a store in Upland. Little was involved in a notorious incident in early 1903 in San Bernardino involving his wife Mary Frances Boxall's family. Charles R. Lloyd, a Welsh born capitalist with transit interests in Oakland and and an electric and gas company in San Bernardino, was accused of having incest with two of Mary Frances Little's sisters. A brother, William Boxall, was driven by Little to San Bernardino to confront Lloyd, who attempted to escape and was shot by Boxall several times on 31 January 1903. Lloyd hovered near death for weeks, recovered sufficiently to return home, and then died in early August. Boxall appears to have been tried twice for the death, but the result of the second trial is unknown. Little was initially arrested for his involvement, but not charged. With fading and stains on the image and significant staining, soiling, rubbing, corner lesses and abrasions on the matte, the condition is perhaps fair.
