University of Melbourne Temporary Deployments

Since 2012, the University of Melbourne has undertaken numerous temporary seismic deployments as part of the UOMSN program, including aftershock monitoring, shallow seismic surveys (e.g. MASW), and other project-specific experiments, with instrumentation and operations primarily funded by the University of Melbourne and AuScope. These short- to medium-term deployments, typically operating for less than two years, are assigned to the FDSN network code VX, distinguishing them from the long-duration VW network. Prior to 2025, data from these deployments were archived using an instance of SRC EQServer software that was not aligned with SEED standards; from 2025 onward, all active VX deployments are managed within a SeisComP system at the University of Melbourne, with ongoing efforts to standardise metadata and migrate historical datasets into SEED-compliant formats. Data products are made publicly available in MiniSEED format via SeedLink services and are mirrored through AusPass. These temporary deployments support a wide range of research activities, including targeted studies of seismicity, site response, and passive imaging, and often complement the permanent network by increasing station density in key regions. Financial support has primarily been provided by AuScope via the National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS; auscope.org.au).
