The release of untreated domestic and hospital effluents into rivers leads to the transmission of infectious diseases and contamination with drug residues, including antimicrobials, which increase the selection of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria. For this investigation, water samples were collected from three different aquatic environments in the state of Sao Paulo, Brazil, and the microbial diversity, virulome, and resistome were evaluated and related to the Water Quality Index from each collection site.
