The effects of increased temperature on physiological variables in two Antarctic fish Pagothenia borchgrevinki (pelagic) and Trematomus bernacchii (sedentary) was investigated using a new technique to measure heart rate (ECG). Measurement of heart rate, respiratory frequency, and from these the respiratory/cardiac couplings in animals at rest and under stress were made. Animals were placed in a closed box respirometer and oxygen consumption was measured. The data also allowed analysis of heart rate variability and determining control of the heart rate by sympathetic/parasymphathetic nervous input. Using cannulated fish, heart rate and blood pressure was recorded in fish acutely raised to 3, 5 and 10°C. Blood samples were analysed for haematocrit, haemoglobin and hormone (adrenaline, noradrenalin) concentrations.
