"Reading Survey in the Normal Population and Among Inmates in Åna Kretsfengsel, 1993" examined the literacy skills of a group of inmates in Åna kretsfengsel. The background for the project was to conduct an empirical study in connection with a dissertation on reading difficulties and behavior problems. The survey used a shortened version of the 8th grade IEA reading test, and a questionnaire mapped reading habits in the period outside prison and as a prisoner. A comparison of the "solution percentage" of the tasks in the test showed little difference if you compare the percentage of correct answers in this survey with the IEA results. Of the 122 participants, 19% acknowledged that they had reading difficulties. In the group of inmates who did not choose to join the survey, there are probably some inmates with major reading and writing difficulties as well.
