A mat was recovered in a small lava tube in the western portion of El
Malpais in west-central New Mexico. The mat was covered with ice on the floor
of the cave at the time of recovery and appeared to have been prehistoric.
Microsccpic analysis was undertaken to identify the construction material of the
mat.
