Phytopathogens and insect pests produce plant cell wall degrading proteases to degrade and inhabit the plant tissues. In response, plants produce protease inhibitors (PIs) that bind to and inactivate these proteases, playing a crucial role in disease resistance. The wild plants varieties, which have not been extensively exposed to multitude of phytopathogens, tend to possess more reselient disease resistant PIs. Given the importance of PIs from wild type species, we performed a comprehensive analysis of PIs from three solanaceae crops-potato, tomato and tobacco- across 23 wild and domesticated vatieties, with the objective of identifying potential candidates effective in combating devastating proteases produced by phytopathogens.

植物病原体与害虫会产生植物细胞壁降解蛋白酶,以降解并侵袭植物组织。作为响应,植物会产生蛋白酶抑制剂(Protease Inhibitors, PIs),通过结合并灭活这些蛋白酶,在抗病性中发挥关键作用。未广泛暴露于多种植物病原体的野生植物品种,往往拥有更具韧性的抗病性蛋白酶抑制剂。鉴于野生型物种来源的蛋白酶抑制剂的重要性,我们对茄科的三种作物——马铃薯、番茄和烟草——在23个野生及栽培品种中的蛋白酶抑制剂进行了全面分析,旨在筛选出能有效对抗植物病原体产生的破坏性蛋白酶的潜在候选物。
