Noord-Holland in het 1e millennium

Tussen het begin van de jaartelling en het jaar 1000 vonden in het gebied dat nu de provincie Noord-Holland is grote veranderingen plaats. Noord-Holland in het 1e millennium vertelt het verhaal van deze periode, waarin de Romeinen hun invloed in Europa verloren en het christendom de dominante culturele inspiratie werd. Het boek is een rijk geïllustreerde synthese van vele honderden wetenschappelijke publicaties over opgravingen en vondsten uit deze periode in de provincie, met de nadruk op de 3e-8e eeuw. De eerste hoofdstukken schetsen een beeld van de provincie in de genoemde periode: het landschap, de bestuurlijke indeling en de aard van de nederzettingen in de diverse regio’s. In de hoofdstukken daarna worden materiële resten van de bewoners behandeld: het aardewerk dat de mensen gebruikten, de huizen die ze bouwden, en de sieraden, gordels en wapens die ze droegen. De hoofdstukken daarop brengen de politieke, taalkundige en geestelijke wereld van de bewoners in beeld: de machtsstructuren en elitevorming, de omgang met overledenen, de gesproken en geschreven taal, en ook de godsverering. In het afsluitende hoofdstuk vormen al deze gegevens de basis voor een onderzoeksagenda waarin nieuwe inzichten worden gekoppeld aan nieuwe vragen die bij toekomstig archeologisch onderzoek centraal kunnen staan. Between the start of the Common Era and the year 1000 CE, profound changes took place in the area that now constitutes the province of Noord-Holland. Noord-Holland in the 1st Millennium recounts the story of this period, during which the Romans lost their influence in Europe and Christianity emerged as the dominant cultural inspiration. This book is a richly illustrated synthesis of hundreds of scientific publications on excavations and finds from this period in the province, with an emphasis on the 3rd to 8th centuries.

The first chapters outline a portrait of the province during the aforementioned period: its landscape, administrative divisions, and the nature of settlements across various regions. Subsequent chapters examine the material remains of the inhabitants: the pottery they used, the houses they constructed, and the jewelry, belts, and weapons they wore. The following chapters depict the political, linguistic, and spiritual world of the inhabitants: power structures and elite formation, practices concerning the deceased, spoken and written language, and religious worship. In the concluding chapter, all these data form the foundation for a research agenda that links new insights to emerging questions which can take center stage in future archaeological research.
