PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an intermediate and a method for producing the intermediate that are excellent in handleability and processability when compounding cellulose nanofibers. SOLUTION: An intermediate of this invention is a porous intermediate containing cellulose nanofibers having an anionic group. The intermediate contains cellulose nanofibers, a cationic surfactant, and a polyhydric alcohol. The cellulose nanofibers have an average fiber diameter of 3 nm to 10 nm and an average aspect ratio of 20 to 350. The mass ratio of the cationic surfactant to the cellulose nanofibers in the intermediate is 0.1 to 2.0 times. The mass ratio of the polyhydric alcohol to the cellulose nanofibers in the intermediate is 2.0 to 20.0 times. SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 4
