We investigated bat fauna on subtropical islands of east Asia and aimed to determine the patterns of species richness, endemism and seasonal movement of bats along elevational gradients. Bat surveys were conducted extensively across various habitats and elevations in Taiwan's main island and 15 outlying islets. Species composition, endemism, distribution of elevational range and biodiversity indices along elevations were assessed. A total of 37 species were recorded. Bats represent the most species-rich terrestrial mammalian order in Taiwan.
