Wallemia ichthyophaga is among the most halophilic fungi known. It is an obligate halophile (requires salt, or at least high concentrations of other osmolytes, for growth) and grows even in saturated NaCl solutions. It is rarely isolated from nature. Most known environmental isolates were genome sequenced to investigate the population structure of the species and to facilitate future studies of this unusual basidiomycete.

嗜鱼沃勒姆菌（Wallemia ichthyophaga）是目前已知的嗜盐性最强的真菌类群之一。该菌为专性嗜盐菌，生长需依赖盐类，或至少需要高浓度的其他渗透调节溶质，即便在饱和氯化钠溶液中仍可生长。该菌极少从自然界中分离获得，目前多数已知的环境分离株已完成基因组测序，以解析该物种的种群结构，并为后续针对这一特殊担子菌的研究提供便利。
