October Household Survey 1993 - South Africa

Abstract

The October Household Survey 1993 is the first of annual sample surveys by the Central Statistical Service (now Statistics South Africa) that collected population, household and employment and migration data for South Africa. The purpose of the survey was primarily to fill the gap that resulted from the suspension of the Current Population Survey (CPS). It was the first time that a comprehensive household survey had been undertaken by the CSS for the total population of South Africa, but still excludes the TBVC States.

The survey covered households and household members in households in development areas that correspond to the nine provinces of South Africa. The survey included the "self-governing territories", but excluded the TBVC states (Transkei, Bophuthatswana, Venda and Ciskei).

A stratified multi-stage cluster sample was used for the OHS. The size and geographical distribution of the population were taken into account in stratifying according to population group and development region (urban and non-urban). The self-governing territories were included in the sample as additional strata. Depending on the size of each stratum, between 20 and 50 enumerator areas (EAs) were drawn at random for inclusion in the sample. Within each EA a cluster of 30 households was drawn at random. Altogether 30300 households in 1010 EAs (Blacks 530 + Coloureds 140 + Asians 100 + Whites 240) were included in the sample.

The 1993 October Household Survey dataset has four data files: births, deaths, persons, and households. The variable uniqnum is the household ID. This variable is missing from the household (House) file and the Deaths files.
