In this paper, we hypothesize that, when American adults are primed to think about a common non-political identity (e.g., shared hobby), they are more likely to think positively about members of the other party. However, based on our original survey experimental data, we find that emphasizing a common non-political identity (e.g. shared hobby) does not improve people’s attitudes towards and desires to interact with outpartisan members. Rather, we find that appealing to a common non-political identity or shared hobby had a negative effect on outpartisan behaviors. This is significant because it suggests that in the context of the United States, the common ingroup identity model (CIIM) does not apply to non-political identities like hobbies in encouraging intergroup contact.
