US Air Force, Air Mobility Command Manual for the Collections Management Database

On 12 October 1990, 36 CFR Part 79, Curation of Federally-Owned and Administered Archaeological Collections, was enacted by Congress to establish minimum standards for the curation of federal collections. In the intervening seven years, the US Army Corps of Engineers Mandatory Center of Expertise for the Curation of Archaeological Collections (MCX-CMAC) has performed many assessments of the curation condition of federal archaeological collections.
One of the major problems identified during the research conducted by MCX-CMAC is the current lack of administrative control over these collections. Many federal agencies do not maintain current listings of all collections from their fee-title lands or from other agency-sponsored activities that generated collections for which the agency assumed responsibility.
In June 1998, Dr. Robin Burgess of HQ/AMC contacted the MCX-CMAC to arrange for the physical rehabilitation of AMC archaeological collections. She also requested the development of a collections management database so that she and AMC Cultural Resource Managers (CRM) could maintain their collections and report on the status of these materials, both by installation personnel and HQ/AMC personnel.
