*Approximately 30 nmol Sia per 100 µg fetuin; 2 mM lactose was used as acceptor substrate.

***KM and vmax were calculated from Michaelis-Menten kinetics (see Supplementary Information, Figure S1) by SigmaPlot. Data points are mean ± standard deviations of three independent experiments, each replicated thrice.
