A Class III Cultural Resource Survey for the Permian Basin MOA Area, Chaves and Eddy Counties, New Mexico (NMCRIS Activity No. 116929)

Between November 2, 2009 and March 23, 2010, a Class III pedestrian survey of 3,358.91 acres (1,359.31 ha) was completed and divided into five parcels in Eddy and Chaves Counties, New Mexico (Lone Mountain Project Number 908-01). The lead agency for this project was the Bureau of Land Management - Carlsbad Field Office.
The task of this project was to inventory and characterize the archaeological landscape in portions of the Permian Basin MOA area that are under-represented by previous archaeological inventory. The data provided by this project will be utilized by the BLM Permian Basin Working Group to help guide future inventory and research projects in the Permian Basin MOA area.
The project area is within Eddy and Chaves Counties on the Henshaw Tank NM (1985); Maljamar NE, NM (1985); Pierce Canyon, NM (1968); Malaga, NM (1985); Red Bluff, NM (1985); and Ross Ranch, NM (1968) 7.5' USGS quadrangles. Lone Mountain archaeologists recorded 183 isolated occurrences and 87 newly discovered sites. Nine previously recorded sites were updated.
Twenty-eight of the sites examined have been recommended eligible for nomination to the NRHP, nine are recommended ineligible, and 59 have undetermined eligibility recommendations. All work was completed in compliance with applicable federal and state legislation and procedures designed to protect nonrenewable cultural resources, including Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 as amended (PL 89-665), the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 (PL 91-852), the Archaeological Resource Protection Act of 1979 (PL 96-95), and Executive Order 11593.

本项目区域位于埃迪县与查韦斯县境内，覆盖美国地质调查局（United States Geological Survey, USGS）7.5'（即1:24000比例尺）的以下7幅地形图幅：亨肖坦克（Henshaw Tank）NM（1985）、马尔贾马尔东北（Maljamar NE）NM（1985）、皮尔斯峡谷（Pierce Canyon）NM（1968）、马拉加（Malaga）NM（1985）、雷德布拉夫（Red Bluff）NM（1985）以及罗斯牧场（Ross Ranch）NM（1968）。孤山项目的考古人员共记录到183处孤立遗存点与87处新发现考古遗址，并更新了9处此前已登记的遗址。
经评估，28处遗址被推荐符合《国家史迹名录》（National Register of Historic Places, NRHP）提名资格，9处遗址被推荐不符合提名资格，另有59处遗址的资格认定结果暂未明确。所有工作均严格遵循旨在保护不可再生文化资源的相关联邦与州级法律法规及作业流程，包括经修订的1966年《国家历史保护法》第106条（公法89-665）、1969年《国家环境政策法》（公法91-852）、1979年《考古资源保护法》（公法96-95），以及行政命令第11593号。
