Fall armyworm is a major global agricultural pest, harming more than 350 plants such as maize and rice. Thus, identification of insecticidal genes with good resistance to Fall armyworm, and cultivation of insect-resistant varieties is an urgent need for plant protection. Here, we found that iJAZ can target Fall armyworm. Damage induced secreted iJAZ GMO rice, maize and cotton have good resistance to Fall armyworm and other lepidopteran pests. In conclusion, iJAZ has a unique expression regulation and insecticidal mechanism, indicating that plants have the ability to actively attack pests to realize self-defense, providing a new strategy for the control of major agricultural pests

草地贪夜蛾(Fall armyworm)是全球性主要农业害虫,可危害玉米、水稻等350余种植物。因此,筛选对草地贪夜蛾具有优良抗性的杀虫基因并培育抗虫品种,是植物保护领域的迫切需求。本研究发现,iJAZ可靶向草地贪夜蛾。经损伤诱导分泌的iJAZ转基因(GMO)水稻、玉米及棉花,对草地贪夜蛾及其他鳞翅目害虫具有优良抗性。综上,iJAZ具有独特的表达调控模式与杀虫机制,这表明植物具备主动抵御害虫以实现自我防卫的能力,为重大农业害虫的防控提供了全新策略。
