This album collects 13 audio tracks published in Sounding the Reef: Comparative Acoustemologies of Underwater Noise thesis for PhD by Matthew Buttacavoli. These tracks illustrate a variety of underwater acoustic phenomenon or associated data. The tracks consist of seven (7) hydrophone recordings, four (4) monologues, and one (1) sound art piece. Tracks 1-4, 13 consist of hydrophone recordings made by the author. They were collected during the fieldwork season from July 2017-January 2018 at various reefs within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, Cairns/Cooktown Management Area. These recordings were collected via hydrophone dropped from the deck of a commercial dive vessel while the vessel was moored. The recording was then edited in Adobe Audition. Tracks 6, 8-10 are monologue stories collected from experts in Seattle (US), Friday Harbor (US), and Victoria (Canada). Each speaker was prompted to tell one story about sound and the Salish Sea. Stories were recorded using a Zoom H4 audio recorder and then edited in Adobe Audition. Track 12 is a sound installation piece which collects four composed sound art pieces commissioned by the author and one field recording by the author (consistent with the methods used in tracks 1-4, 13). The artists were prompted to use the field recording to produce a sound art piece addressing the possible future state of the Great Barrier Reef. The pieces were then combined into one track. Tracks 5, 7, 11 are hydrophone recordings produced by Orcasound and used in this dataset and thesis under Creative Commons license (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0). All recordings were made via hydrophone in the Salish Sea, in or around the San Juan Islands archipelago.
