These data investigated the effects of environmental factors on the production of methane in marine sediment, by quantifying and comparing the methanogenesis rates from different 14C-labeled substrates in nearshore and offshore seep sediments of northern Gulf of Mexico. The dataset reports geochemistry of the study sites, the turnover rates and methanogenesis rates from bicarbonate, acetate, methanol and methylamine under a series of experimental conditions. Experimental treatments included changes to methane concentration, pressure, temperature. Incubations were also performed in the presence of inhibitory compounds. Site geochemical data used to calculate rate measurements from sites GC600 and GC767 are associated with GRIIDC dataset R4.x268.000:0003.
