The Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM) strata in the northern Bighorn Basin, Wyoming, exhibit changes in alluvial records correlated with high-resolution climate archives. We investigate these strata to demonstrate the complexity of paleosol changes and stratigraphic spacing. Comparisons with climate records reconstructed from paleo-aerosols reveal that these changes correspond to the maximum climatic fluctuations of the Paleocene-Eocene PETM. Specifically, the middle section of this stratigraphic interval contains thick paleosols and thin rip-up sediments, which are associated with floodplain timing and lower mean annual precipitation.
