Distribution of Various Plants in the York University Danby Woods

On September 21st, 2015 at approximatly 15:00, the students from Chris Lortie's BIOL 2050 clss in Bailey Hewitt's 01 tutorial section, performed an experiment where they were to use quadrats and transects to collect field data in Danby Woods, located in York University. That day, the weather was 21 degrees and was semi-chilly, due to the wind. This experiment was performed in groups of four. My group included myself, Amena, Frankie, and Taylor. I conducted Grassland Data Set 1 using a quadrat. Quadrats are a square frame used to record the abundance inside the area of said square. My partner, Amena, and I used the random number website to collect 25 numbers, which we then used as step counts. Every time a number was generated we would walk that many steps until that number was recahed. We would then use the quadrat, placing it on the ground in front of us and count the number of plants we saw and also examine the diversity of the area inside the square. It is intersting to note that there was more variety, life and a higher count of plants in the middle of the grasslands, as opposed to the ones on the outer portions. We noted spotting the common plantain, common marlow, the common thistle and the common milkweed.
