Low-abundance microbial species, often overlooked due to their low relative abundance, might play critical roles in shaping microbial community dynamics and ecosystem functions. To investigate these understudied microorganisms, this study developed a novel strategy combining D2O incubation, single-cell Raman micro-spectroscopy, and cell sorting. This approach enables the identification and isolation of viable cells from complex microbial communities.
