The Humungous Fungus of Michigan Three Decades On

This study examined the mutation dynamic within an individual of the fungus Armillaria covering a large territory of mixed hardwood forest in northern Michigan. These individuals arise in a unique mating event and then spread vegetatively from host tree to host tree. During this spread mutations are left behind in discrete spatial sectors, resulting a spatial record of these events. The 15 samples here were collected from different points within the territory occupied by this individual. We then looked for variation genome wide among the 15 samples.
