The oxygen-resistant [NiFe] hydrogenase of H. marinus, involved in the H2 metabolism and energy generation, is an important model enzyme for study and development of stable H2 catalyst working under aerobic condition. The biosynthesis of the hydrogenase with its high complexity, as well as the mechanism of the extreme O2 resistance has not been fully understood. We expect the genome scale study will provide plentiful clues and useful information for elucidating the fundamentals of this interesting enzyme and the relevant metabolisms. Also, insight can be obtained regarding the carbon and hydrogen cycle in marine ecosystem, since the organism is the first obligate aerobic H2 oxidizer isolated from marine environment.
