Six stratigraphic samples from a soil profile at 24BH2521 were examined for
pollen. This soil profile exhibits two occupational components, the upper
representing a Besant ocxxipation near AD 200, and the lower representing a
Powers-Ycnkee occupation around 900 BC. Occupation in southeastern Montana
follows a predictable pattern. Prior to AD 100 occupation is infrequent,
increasing in frequency between AD 100 arri AD 700. Occupation then declines
between AD 750 andAD 1100, ceasing for approximately 200 years before cxmtinuing
(Gene Munson, personal cxaranunicatian, February 21, 1992). Pollen analysis of
this stratigraphic profile was undertaken in an attempt to identify changes in
vegetative or climatic conditions that may have influenced the occupation of the
area.
