"The development of modern communication networks is accompanied by simultaneous growth in requirements for data rate, reliability, and cybersecurity. However, measures aimed at improving robustness and protection inevitably introduce additional overhead and may reduce the effective data rate available to users. This paper examines the main types of trade-offs between speed, error probability, and cryptographic protection costs in high-speed communication systems. It analyzes throughput and goodput metrics, the impact of error-correcting codes, ARQ\/HARQ mechanisms, and adaptive modulation on spectral efficiency. Special attention is given to protocol and computational overhead introduced by security mechanisms (TLS, IPsec, VPN), as well as their interaction with the specifics of terrestrial and satellite communication channels, including low-Earth-orbit constellations. Based on the comparison of different scenarios, the study shows that achieving the required level of reliability and security under spectrum constraints requires a balanced choice of parameters and architectural solutions, rather than a one-sided pursuit of maximum speed."
