A History of the Lands Composing the Avon Park Bombing Range

Giving an intimate history of the lands composing the Avon Park Bombing Range, this report is the result of the Avon Park Air Force Range participating in a program to identify and protect historic sites on government lands, particularly those located on their Air Force Range. Although the activities in the area may not have been significant within the definition of federal and state laws, installation personnel felt that sites of local interest should be identified and described. Without this knowledge, development of the installation could inadvertently and unnecessarily destroy the sites of old homesteads and other activities.
This report is based predominantly on unpublished sources: personal interviews, original documents, and the personal knowledge of the investigator. This approach is most appropriate in this instance because there is little formal documentation of the history of the region. Much more information exists in the memory and uncatalogued papers of local residents whose relatives actually lived there.
