Crop straw residue mulching plays a critical role in protecting black soils. It covers bare soils during non-growing seasons to prevent wind erosion, and the residues are returned to croplands after crop harvesting to increase soil organic matter content. Although some studies have employed remote sensing techniques to map crop residue coverage, their findings are mostly restricted to small spatial scales, thereby limiting their generalizability. In this study, we developed a novel Corn Residue Coverage (CRC) dataset for Northeast China spanning the period from 2013 to 2021. The objective of this dataset is to provide a fundamental basis for describing and monitoring CRC for black soil conservation. The accuracy of our estimated CRC results was validated against prior studies and field-measured data, yielding a high agreement with a coefficient of determination (R²) of 0.7304 and a root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.1247 between the estimated and measured CRC values. In field validation activities. Furthermore, this dataset is the first of its kind to offer the longest time series among comparable datasets, which enhances its value for long-term monitoring and analysis.
